“Heroica Cartagena” alluding to the walled city, is the name of the first legally incorporated beer factory in Cartagena de Indias.
Germán Díaz, a 24-year-old young man, is the creator of this innovative business. He came up with this idea while he was studying to become a chemical engineer.
Given the lack of job opportunities, Germán decided to start his own business. His family supported him to believe in his dreams. He also had the support of SENA, through the Emprender Fund, seed capital, and guidance. “They helped me and taught me how to do business,” he says. Currently, ‘Heroica Cartagena’ generates 4 direct jobs and is positioned in the local market.
‘Heroica Cartagena’ beers are sold in hotels and some local restaurants, also in cities such as: Medellín, Valledupar and La Guajira.

A 24-year-old young man materialized his business idea and became the owner of the first legalized craft brewery that produces barley and coconut drinks in Cartagena.

See how we support entrepreneurial youth.
In SENA, small entrepreneurs are guided under the 4k model, which combines four key factors to be an entrepreneur: psychological capital, seed capital, support capital, and social capital; in addition to promoting an entrepreneurial culture. This motivated the young entrepreneur to create a company with the help of the “most beloved Entity in Colombia”.
Today, ‘Heroica Cartagena’ produces two types of beer: ‘Heroica Oro’, a light, smooth and refreshing 100% barley blonde drink and ‘Cartagena Cocada’ which has an addition of toasted coconut, which provides a different and innovative flavor that pays tribute to Cartagena with a fruit from the region.
