Manuel Andrés González Piña was born in Maracaibo, capital of the Zulia state of Venezuela. He is the grandson of Evangelina Estupiñán, a native of Sardinia, Norte de Santander that thanks to her condition as a Colombian, was able to shelter her family and return to Colombia like many of the returned families. “My life took a 180-degree turn, leaving my city, school, my friends, the neighborhood and part of my family was very sad and difficult,” says Manuel, a 16-year-old apprentice at the Tecnoacademia Nodo Cúcuta and a student at the Nuestra Señora de Belen School.
Like many Venezuelans residing in Cúcuta, his parents take odd jobs to provide Manuel and his sister housing and education. But the sum of their efforts places them in the Las Delicias neighborhood and the opportunity to provide their children with an education, which is when fate smiles upon the Venezuelan teenager because their school received a visit from SENA at the beginning of 2020 offering free pedagogical training of Tecnoacademia.

Manuel is grateful for the opportunity they have given him, and when he graduates from high school, he hopes to continue with his training process at SENA.

“I have learned about Nanotechnology, Robotics, Electronics, Design, and 3D Prototyping. I am part of The Last Hope team as a researcher and programmer. This year we represented SENA in the First Lego national contest, and we got a place for the international competition in 2020. I discovered science and technology, and happiness at Tecnoacademia,” said Manuel.
During President Iván Duque’s visit to the Tecnoacademia facilities, the young man presented his robotics projects. He spoke with the president, who told him: “I am glad that through SENA, we are giving the Venezuelan brothers a training opportunity, keep studying so that you can fulfill your dreams in our country”.
For Manuel, those words are the engine and inspiration to continue in the process of his training. He wants to be a great scientist, technology, and innovation developer; he wants to give back to his parents and grandmother all the sacrifices made to provide him with decent living conditions.
